About Piccoli Wines
We love Valpolicella. The wine region in the hills north of Verona is home to some of the best wines in Italy. Piccoli stands out. First and most importantly, because of their amazing wines, made ‘without compromises or shortcuts’, as the founder Daniela Piccoli says. Second, there is the glorious location on Monte La Parte with a modern winery cut into the rock. Third, we love the fact that, in a largely male-dominated industry, Piccoli is run by three wonderful women.
Why we love this wine
Piccoli make this wine from grapes grown on their own 15ha vineyard. They’re hand-picked, carefully selected and dried for four months to concentrate flavours. To further enrich the flavours, the grapes are cold macerated for 15 days and fermented slowly for at least a month. To allow the flavours to develop and integrate, the wine then spends an amazing five years in French oak barrels and another year in bottle before being release. Why we love this wine? Because it is lovingly made and beautifully concentrated.
Why you’ll love this wine
You’ll taste ripe red and black fruit, such as black cherry, figs and plum with chocolate, leather and tobacco from the ageing. This full-bodied, structured wine goes perfectly with red meat, game, salami and ripe cheese. Their regular Amarone, which we also sell and love, is outstanding but with the extra selection and care, this 2008 Selection is the best of the best.
