We love Valpolicella. The wine region in the hills north of Verona is home to some of the best wines in Italy. Piccoli stands out. First and most importantly, because of their amazing wines, made ‘without compromises or shortcuts’, as the founder Daniela Piccoli says. Second, there is the glorious location on Monte La Parte with a modern winery cut into the rock. Third, we love the fact that, in a largely male-dominated industry, Piccoli is run by three wonderful women.
Why we love this wine
This Recioto is not cloyingly sweet or sticky like some dessert wines and it has wonderful, subtle flavours of ripe black cherry, plum, chocolate, wood spice, cocoa and dried fruits. Piccoli only make 400 bottles a year and only in the best vintages; each half-bottle is individually numbered.
Why you’ll love this wine
This half-bottle of dessert wine is the perfect alternative to Port or a sweet Sauternes at the end of a meal. It pairs perfectly with cheese or puddings. The Italians drink it with biscotti and panettone but we think it works brilliantly with dark chocolate as well.
