We love Valpolicella. The wine region in the hills north of Verona is home to some of the best wines in Italy. Piccoli stands out. First and most importantly, because of their amazing wines, made ‘without compromises or shortcuts’, as the founder Daniela Piccoli says. Second, there is the glorious location on Monte La Parte with a modern winery cut into the rock. Third, we love the fact that, in a largely male-dominated industry, Piccoli is run by three wonderful women.
Why we love this wine
We love this wine and we don’t need an excuse to drink a glass. With its lovely ruby colour, it displays aromas of cherry pipe tobacco, wet stones, pepper, vanilla and a hint of gun powder. On the palate it is dry, with high acidity, medium tannin, medium body and a long finish of ripe cherry liquor and mocha.
Why you’ll love this wine
It’s a beautifully-crafted wine with complex flavours and great finesse. Try it with risotto, hard cheese, game or red meat. Perfect for a dinner party with friends or a Sunday roast. This Valpolicella is remarkable value for a wine that is made with so much care: hand-picked, selected and aged for at least four years in French oak barrels.
