About Anima Syrah
Anima Syrah is another classic international variety that is beginning to shine in Romania in the skilled hands of winemaker Aurelia Vișinescu.
The Anima range is made in limited quantities from the best grapes and only in exceptional years. This 100% varietal Syrah is aged for 13 months in 225 and 300 litre barrels using a mix of Romanian, French and Russian oak. The grapes for this wine are grown entirely in a compact plantation located on the southern slope near Naeni in the Buzau Hills.
Why we love this wine
It’s a classic Syrah – ripe, rich, concentrated with those characteristic hints of black pepper, rubber and pencil shavings on top of layers of red fruit like redcurrant, sour red cherry and red plum. It’s well put together with the structure to age for at least another 10 years.
Why you’ll love this wine
In terms of its wine-making, it is a combination of the old world, the Rhone Valley, and the new world, the Barossa Valley, keeping the vegetal notes, spices and spices layered over the fruit. It’ll pair perfectly with roasts or game. Aurelia thinks it would also go with spicy Moroccan or Indian food but with 15% ABV, I’d avoid too much chili heat.
